Russell G. Lodes

Russell G. Lodes, 85, of Trenton passed away on Wednesday, November 24, 2010, at his home. He was born in Fremont, Nebraska on March 20, 1925 to parents Fred G. Lodes and Faye (Baer) Lodes. He was baptized in St. Peter's Church in Fremont.
In 1943, he joined the Navy, served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nassau CVE 16 and also on the USS Cartera APA 70. Russ served in the South Pacific during World War II, going through the battles at Palau, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
He started work for Watson Bros. Transportation Co. in Omaha in 1947, later Yellow Freight System purchased the company. Russ transferred to Des Moines, Iowa, then to Indianapolis, IN where he retired after 40 years of driving over the road.
Russ belonged to Jefferson Lodge No. 90, Middletown, OH; 10xl0 International; Furnas Co. NE Genealogical Society; Teamster Retiree Chapter #135 in Indianapolis, IN; USS Nassau CVE 16 , Escort Aircraft Carrier Organization, and the Loyal Order of the Moose, Middletown, OH Lodge 501.
He held an extra class license, Amateur Radio, KB8FGM, traveled and compiled his family history. He wrote and published two books, "The Lodes Family of Colfax County, Nebraska." All four sides of his family, the Lodes family, Blum's, Baer and Hoyleman families homesteaded in Nebraska in the 1860's. Russ also enjoyed his fifteen years going to Cardiac Rehab at Middletown Hospital and the Atrium.
In 1986 he wed Velma (Pressler Goodman) Lodes and they resided in Trenton for twenty-four years.
Russ is survived by his wife, three sons, James (Teresa) of Lenexa, KS; John (Betty) of Lincoln, NE; and Thomas of Menlo Park, CA. He is survived by ten grandchilden;Wendy Rankin, David Lodes, Daniel Lodes, Abigail Lodes, Mary Michelle Brown, John Lodes Jr., Andrew Lodes, Matthew Lodes, Evan Lodes, Amanda Lodes, and fifteen great grand¬children. His sister, Fern Pugh, resides in Phoenix, AZ.
He is also survived by two stepchildren, William Goodman and Vicki Poplin, two step grandsons, Robert William Poplin and Bruce Russell Poplin, and one step great grandson, Robert Lee (Bobbie) Poplin.
Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at 10:00 AM at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd., Middletown, with Pastor Thomas Wray officiating. Visitation will be Monday evening from 5:00 – 8:00 PM with Masonic Services at 7:30 PM and Tuesday morning before the service from 9:00 – 10:00 AM.
