Pauline L. Schmidt

Pauline (Guscott) Schmidt, 96, of Mt. Pleasant Place, Monroe, died Wednesday, January 11, 2012, at Atrium Medical Center. She was born in Rochester, Ohio on April 1, 1915 to parents William George and Blanche (Reed) Guscott and grew up in Olmsted Falls, Ohio.

Pauline was a graduate of Oberlin College and Western Reserve Library School. Her first position brought her to Middletown in 1938. She also worked at the Dayton & Montgomery County Library and was county librarian in Holmes County in the Amish section of Ohio. Returning to Middletown, she married Arno Werner Schmidt and continued library service at the Middletown Public Library, later transferring to the public schools as high school librarian. At the time of her retirement in 1980 she was coordinator of all the school libraries. She was most proud of bringing all the elementary libraries into a standardized organization under trained library aides. She was a member of Monroe Presbyterian Church, the Monroe Historical Society where she served as the first museum curator and a historian, the Monroe Current Events Club, the Ohio Education Association and was a charter member of Ohio Educational Library/Media Association.

Mrs. Schmidt is survived by two sons, William Werner (Lettie Saylor) Schmidt of Yakima, WA & Frederick Paul Schmidt of Middletown; grandchildren, Heidi (Jason) Fancett of Middletown & Susan (Major Brian) Barnes of Colorado Springs, CO; and two great grandchildren, Abby & Claire Fancett.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Helen Simmerer; and two grandchildren, William Schmidt & Adam Schmidt.

A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, January 16, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Monroe Presbyterian Church, 57 W. Elm Street, Monroe with Reverend Patrick Warren officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Cincinnati Association for the Blind & Visually Impaired, 2045 Gilbert Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45202 – OR - Mt. Pleasant Life Care Fund, 225 Britton Lane, Monroe, OH 45050.
