Norma June Martin

MARTIN (Swartz), Norma June 82, a longtime resident of Shafor Street, Middletown, passed away peacefully, with family by her side, November 18, 2010 at Otterbein in Lebanon. She is survived by her children Mulford III "Ford" of Bellingham, WA, Thomas (Shelly) of Okeana, OH, Stephen of Lebanon, OH, Elizabeth of Middletown, OH, and Joseph (Shirley Jones) of Middletown, OH, and by her sister Phyllis Phipps Barnes (Charley) of Solomons, MD. Also survived by her grandchildren Emily, Natalie, Ashley, Evan, Collin, Joshua, Erik, Heather, Garrett Jones, Nathaniel, Gabriel, Benjamin, and Amelia, and by numerous nieces, nephews, and many other family and friends.

Norma was born October 14, 1928, to Orville and Ruby Nay Swartz, in Chicago, Illinois, and was a resident of Middletown for 56 years. She graduated from Miami University with a Bachelor of Arts, and earned her Master's Degree in Social Work from University of Louisville. As a social worker she worked with troubled teens, elderly and others in Middletown, Richmond, IN, and Texas.

Norma was active in the Episcopal Church throughout her life in Middletown, as a giving member of the congregation and choir.

Norma enjoyed singing, poetry and wrote many expressive poems, was an avid reader, and lifelong learner. She grew up on a farm in Illinois where she would sometimes steal away from her chores to read her books under a tree.

Norma especially enjoyed spending time with her family, was always concerned with and interested in others' lives, and will be dearly missed by all.

Visitation will be held at The Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 2709 McGee Ave., Middletown, on Saturday November 20 , 2010 from 10:30AM to 12:00 Noon, followed by a service at 12:00 Noon and fellowship. Burial will be on Monday November 22 at 2:00PM in Richwood Cemetery, Westfield, IL, where her mother, sister, and brother are at rest. Both services to be officiated by the Reverend Elaine S. Caldbeck. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the Church of the Ascension.
