John J. Trotta Sr.

Mr. John Joseph Trotta, Sr., age 91, went to his heavenly reward on January 14, 2010 at Atrium Medical Center.

Mr. Trotta was born on August 28, 1918, to Antonio Trotta and Antonina Ionna Trotta in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was a graduate of Woodward High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from May 1942 until November of 1945.

Mr. Trotta was stationed at Keesler Field Army Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi from 1942-1943, where he met his future wife, Miriam Newman of Biloxi. He received further technical training at Oklahoma A&M College in Stillwater, OK, and was assigned to the statistical section of the Headquarters Department of the 417th Bomb Group, where he remained for the rest of his military career.

On New Year's Day 1944, Sgt. Trotta embarked on a 23-day trip to New Guinea aboard the U.S.A.F. Noordam with the 417th Bomb Group, who flew combat missions in Dobadura and Saidor. In September 1944, the group moved up to Noemfoor Island in the Netherlands East Indies. They landed at Mindoro in the Philippines in December of 1944, where they participated in the largest coordinated low-level strikes on the Philippines when they hit Clark Field in Manila, making way for the infantry. Mr. Trotta returned to the states from Okinawa in October, 1945.

The Bronze Star Medal was awarded to Mr. Trotta "for meritorious achievement in connection with military operations in New Guinea, the Netherlands East Indies, the Philippine Islands, and the Ryukyu Islands from 4 April 1944 to 27 August 1945."

Upon discharge from the service, Mr. Trotta returned to Biloxi where he married Miriam Newman on December 8th, 1945. They made their first home in Cincinnati, relocated to Middletown in 1957 and Monroe in 1975. Mr. Trotta retired from Armco Steel in 1978, and from the Internal Revenue Service in 1983. During his retirement years, he did volunteer work with the IRS and Meals-on-Wheels. He was a founding member of FAMA (Fenwick Arts & Music Association). He was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church.

Mr. Trotta is survived by his wife of 64 years, Miriam E. Trotta; three sons, John J. (Patricia) Trotta, Jr., Ronald C. (Elly) Trotta and Mark E. (Margaret) Trotta; five grandchildren, Michael A. Trotta, Matthew R. Trotta, Mark Andrew (Sarah) Trotta, Nicholas L. Trotta and Alison Grace McKenzie; one great grandson, Conner McKenzie; two beloved sisters-in-law, Ida Trotta and Florence Trotta; two nieces, Mary Ann Trotta, R.S.M and Elaine Bietenhaus; a nephew, Gino Anthony Trotta; great-niece Anne Ernst and great-nephew Adam C. Bacon .

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, and two brothers: Fred L. Trotta and Gino C. Trotta.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, January 18, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 330 Lebanon St., Monroe, OH with Father Terry Meehan as celebrant. Visitation will be one hour prior to service from 10 – 11 AM at the church. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Middletown Combined Honor Guard.
