Hubert "Spanky" S. Steele, Jr.

Hubert S. Steele Jr, 86 of West Portsmouth, formerly of Middletown, Ohio, died Tuesday August 2, 2022 at SOMC Hospice. He was born March 24, 1936 in Middletown to the late Hubert S. Steele Sr. and Elizabeth Draxler Steele.

He graduated from Monroe High School and attended Miami University. He took an active part in many community projects, such as the Southern Ohio Concert band, several stage productions, Dial radio Club, played in the ARMCO band, a Dixieland band and other worth while projects in the Middletown area. He is retired from ARMCO where he was employed for 30 years. After retirement he became a minister with the Salvation Army where he served in Portsmouth, Manhattan and the South Bronx in New York along with Cincinnati and Dayton. He retired and moved to Portsmouth in 1999. He was a member and Past Master of Aurora Masonic Lodge # 48, 32 Degree of the Valley of Dayton Scottish Rite, Knight Templar of the York Rite, Calvery # 13 in Portsmouth, member and active and former trustee of Careys Run Church of Christ.

Hubert, better known as “Spanky” to his family, is survived by his wife, Donna Cowgill; 2 sons, Hubert S. (Katherine) Steele III and Scott A. (Tina) Steele; a daughter, Rhonda J. (Booker) Anderson; 2 grandsons, Richard Snow and Shelby Snow; 6 great grandchildren along with great granddaughter Nyriah and great great granddaughter Kiani.

Funeral services will be 12:00 Noon on Friday August 5, 2022 at the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth with Captain Dan and Misty Simco officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday starting at 11:00 AM. A graveside service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday August 6, 2022 at Woodside Cemetery (Section 20) in Middletown, Ohio.

The family requests that donations be made to the Salvation Army in Hubert’s name.
