Dr. John H. Varney

John H. "Jack" Varney Jr., MD, passed away Saturday, November 29, 2014. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 63 years, Jayne, and his children: Christine (Ted) Anderson, Kathleen (Ted) Schwartz, Patricia Varney, and Michael (Nancy) Varney MD. He had 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren and one devoted feline friend, Charley.

Jack was born on November 7, 1926 of Grace (Dittenhoefer) and John H. Varney Sr. in Boston, MA. He graduated from Bishop Loughlin High School High School in Brooklyn and from Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He completed his Doctor of Medicine degree at University of Michigan and interned at Philadelphia Naval Hospital. He completed his residency training in anesthesia at the Ohio State University. He served over 19 years in the United States Navy as a flight surgeon, honorably discharged at the rank of Lieutenant. He served the citizens of his community at Middletown Regional Hospital for 33 years, administering surgical anesthesia for over 40, 000 patients. Jack served as the President of the Butler County Medical Society and was a member of the Cotillion Dance Club for 20 years. In retirement he visited many friends at Mount Pleasant Retirement Home. Anniversary trips were spent with Patricia and Robert Tennant, MD who were married on the same day and year as Jack and Jayne. He relaxed with his favorite hobbies of woodworking and repairing, making, and collecting clocks. He enjoyed camping at Myrtle Beach with family and friends. Jack was a generous philanthropist and a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many.

Memorial service will be held Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at 11:00 am at Holy Family Parish - St. John's Church, 1405 First Avenue, Middletown.
