Carolyn Spitz Nerenberg

December 13, 1927 — October 18, 2018

Carolyn Spitz Nerenberg, of Middletown, passed away on October 18, 2018 at her home. Born in Cincinnati on December 13, 1927, Carolyn graduated in 1945 from her beloved Walnut Hills High School and started at the University of Cincinnati where she met the love of her life, Robert Nerenberg. She postponed her college education to marry Bob in 1947 and start their family. She later continued her education in the mid-1960’s, graduated cum laude from Miami University, elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and began her long career as a teacher of English literature in the Middletown school system.

She was an avid bridge player and bridge club host along with Bob, enjoyed years of playing golf, and loved entertaining with her bridge club and stock club friends. She formed many close friendships with her teacher colleagues and stayed in touch with some of her former students. Nothing pleased her more than being approached by an adult former student who would fondly share the value and positive impact her class had on their lives. After her retirement from teaching in the late 1980’s, she complemented the art history classes she began taking with travel to Europe, especially Italy. To her last days, she loved regaling the thrill and excitement of those trips with Bob: the art, the history, the museums, the cuisine, the interesting encounters. She was a long time member of Temple Beth Sholom where all her sons and many of her grandsons celebrated Bar Mitzvah.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Robert (Bob) in 2006, by daughter, Lisa Nerenberg, in 1963 and sister, Helen Shuller, in 2015. She is survived by three sons, Bruce (Laura) Nerenberg, Jon (Carolyn) Nerenberg, and Danny Nerenberg and his partner, Mary Kuntz; six grandsons, Joshua, Lloyd, Jason (Kristin), Jared (Anna), Max, and Sam; great-grandchildren, Brendon, Cam, Jack, Brooklyn; extended family, Amie MacDonald, Jason (Ashley Hunter) MacDonald and Hunter MacDonald and loyal companions, Pam Smith and Janet Blevins.
