Alene Mae Key "Big Al", 80, of Middletown, born in Tacoma, WA., departed for her journey into Heaven on January 6, 2014, at Springhills of Middletown.
Alene was a elementary teacher, high school counselor, college administrator and dean of girls during her 34 years in education. During her service she earned many awards and designations. She had earned 2 masters degrees, one in special education, and the other in counseling and guidance, plus a P.P.S. credential. She attended Olympic State, Central Washington University, Clearmont Graduate School and L.A. State after her graduation from South Kitsap High School. She continued teaching in her retirement at the YMCA Celebrate Living classes.
She was an animal lover throughout her life. She had a horse while growing up along with many other animals and adopted many cats from shelters.
She was a fan of professional and college sports attending many games in California and Ohio. She was as well an accomplished athlete holding the title of Miss Softball of the Pacific Northwest for 8 years, where she played the position of catcher for the nationally known Bremerton Green Jackets fast pitch soft ball team. She was inducted in 1999 into the State of Washington Softball Hall of Fame. She met the remaining members of the woman's professional softball team, who were storied in the movie, A League of Their Own.
Alene, with her travel companion Ms. Pat Haines, visited 49 of the 50 States, and travelled to England, France, Switzerland, Greece, Spain, Morocco, Italy, the African Continent, Mexico, Yucatan, Peru, the Caribbean, and Canada. They started their travels during the summer months in 1965 and travelled the remote areas off the beaten path to see many places other tourists would not see. She was interested in experiencing other cultures and learning as much as she could to relate to others her knowledge gained in her travels.
She is a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Middletown, where she served as a Deacon and Elder. She was a member of the Bull's Run Ramblers, Red Hat's, the Sorg Opera and was a Rosie Red. She enjoyed the arts and attended the Town Hall Lecture Series in Dayton and Kings Island.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, Joe Weekley Key and Alice Headrick-Key, Friends/Family, Patricia Haines, Mac Haines, Dale Haines, Betty Haines and Mike Haines. She is survived by her cousin, Iverna Malsom of Oregon, a Brother, Joseph W. (Jane) Haines, nieces and nephews Maxine (Jerry) Lawrence of Florida, Sherry Castro of Florida, Patricia Cassidy of California, Robin (Kevin) Hake of Ohio, Bruce (Lisa) Haines of Middletown; 16 great nieces and nephews; and many special friends and neighbors. A special thanks to the staff of Springhills of Middletown for their loving care and special friendships.
Visitation will be held Saturday, January 11, 2014, at 2:30 PM with funeral service following at 3:00 PM at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd. Middletown with Reverend Greg Gibson officiating. Interment will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Avenue, Dayton, Ohio 45420 or the charity of your choice.
