Mary Anne Weikel, 74, passed away Saturday, May 12, 2012, at Rittenhouse Senior Living of Middletown. She was born in Middletown on February 8, 1938 to parents Homer O. and Helen (Jones) Weikel.

Mary Anne graduated from Middletown High School in 1956, Miami University in 1960 with a degree in education and received a Master's Degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois in 1966. During her junior year in high school, Mary Anne suffered a neurological attack that affected her left leg. It was later diagnosed as Multiple Sclerosis, a disease that she would courageously battle for the rest of her life. From 1960-1980 she taught junior and senior high school mathematics in Bethesda, Maryland and Oak Park, Illinois. She also spent one year teaching at Ramsis College for Girls in Cairo, Egypt. At Oak Park she was known as the Christian teacher who led her homeroom in the Pledge of Allegiance. In 1976 when patriotism and Christianity were becoming politically unacceptable, she introduced National (Christian) Educators Fellowship to her school. In 1980 she returned to Middletown and became financial secretary at the First Presbyterian Church where she had been a lifetime member. While there she wrote a book, "The History of Churches of Middletown, Ohio, 1791-1991" which was buried in the Bicentennial Time Capsule. Christian service was the cornerstone of her life. She attended numerous Christian conferences and conventions and was named one of the 100 most influential Presbyterian women in 1977. She also completed a mission trip to Guanghou, China in 1988.
