Mary Alice 'Marnie' Squire

February 6, 1937 — February 20, 2007

Mary Alice “Marnie” Squire , 70, died, at home, February 20, from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

Marnie was a musician and pianist for most of her life. She was passionate about her music, her teaching, her career as a piano technician, and all of the other activities she was involved in over the years, which included playing the harp; dancing; performing with folk dance groups; performing and playing hand bells and the harpsichord with P.R.O.M.I.S.E.S.; playing the organ in churches; bicycling; hiking; and camping.

She was a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music. She was a member of Music Teachers National Association, Ohio Music Teachers Association, National Guild of Piano Teachers, American College of Musicians, National Federation of Music Clubs, International Society of Folk Harpers and Craftsmen, the Middletown Music Club, and the Piano Technicians Guild. She has been a counselor for the junior music club, The Noteworthy Musicians for many years. Her knowledge and experience as an adjudicator and clinician were recognized by teaching professionals throughout the region. She published a piano book, Sounds Good to Me, which is a primer on improvisation for adult students.

She was a member of the Miami Valley Folk Dancers, the Zivio dancers of the South Slavic Club, the UC Folk Dancers, Cincinnati Court Dancers, Dayton Cycling Club, Cincinnati Cycling Club, and Elderhostel.

Marnie was a graduate of Notre Dame High School in Toledo, and Capitol University, after having attended the University of Toledo. She has been a member of Holy Family Church, and Hope Lutheran Church.

She is survived by sons Greg and Dan, daughter Kathy, brother Larry, former husband Jerry, and four grandchildren.

She wished to thank everyone for their visits, food, cards, notes, and gifts. She also wished to thank her caregivers Linda, Amber, Edith, Carol, all of her therapists--and devoted friend Jim.

A memorial service will be held Friday March 2, 7:00 PM, at First United Methodist Church, 120 S. Broad Street, Middletown, Across from the Middletown Library at the corner of S.Broad & Second Ave.
