Margaret Ann Bailey Stevens

Margaret Ann Bailey Stevens, 86, of Middletown, died Monday, January 13, 2003 at Middletown Regional Hospital. She was born in Middletown on November 4, 1916, to parents Clayton M. and Helen (Sebald) Bailey. She and R.D. “Tootie” were married on November 8, 1940, in Middletown at St. Paul’s.

Margaret Ann was a graduate of the Middletown High School, Illustrious Class of 1934 and attended the Middletown Business School at Holy Trinity. She worked as an administrative assistant at First National Bank, and for a period of time in the mid-80’s, she assisted in the operations of the family business, the Middletown Sand & Gravel Company, with her husband, “Tootie” Stevens. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s and member of the Women’s Guild at church. She was a member of the service sorority Delta Theta Tau and organized style shows for the group. She, along with her sister Charma, helped establish the Doty House and worked as a volunteer there.

Mrs. Stevens was a lifetime member of the Middletown Historical Society and donated all of the historical markers around Middletown. She was also a member of the Monroe, Blue Ball, Trenton, Carlisle, and Chrisholm Historical Societies. She was a member of the Salvation Army Auxiliary and helped organize the Antique Fairs at the armory and the Children’s Toyland for needy children, with Charma. She and her husband, Tootie, were one of the founders of the Middletown Cotillion. She was also one of the founding donors of the Middletown Community Foundation. Margaret Ann was a member and past regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Colonists, and Colonial Dames of the 17th Century. She initiated the March of Dimes in Middletown, spearheaded the Campaign for Fluoridation in the 1960’s, and was a member of the League of Women Voters. She was a member of the Middletown Women’s Symphony, the Mother’s Study Group, the Middletown Safety Council, and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 218. She was a member of the Friends of the Library, and met with a sewing group at the library. During World War II, she knitted bandages for the American Red Cross. She was a member of the Cincinnati Zoological and Botanical Gardens and the Cincinnati Natural History Museum. She was a patron of the Cincinnati Art Museum, and the Sorg Opera, where she also served on the board. She served on other boards as well, including the William Sebald Realty Company Board, and the board of the Women’s Center.

Mrs. Stevens is survived by her daughter, Helen E. (Richard) Stevens-Gleason, of Middletown; son, Russell D. (Kathleen) Stevens III, of Hamilton; four grandchildren Aggy Elizabeth Stevens-Gleason, Anny Valentine Stevens-Gleason, Mary Kathleen Stevens, and Sarah Sutton Stevens; and a nephew, John David Myers of Molika’i, Hawaii.

She was preceded in death by her husband R.D. “Tootie” Stevens, Jr. in 1987; an infant daughter, Ann Stevens, in 1946; and a sister Charma Bailey Myers.

Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, January 18, 2003 at the Church of the Ascension, 2709 McGee Avenue, with Reverend Walter J. Mycoff, Jr., Reverend Jerry O’Connor, and Reverend Clyde A. Martin officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 3:30 – 8:00 PM at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd., at Bonita Drive. Interment will be in Woodside Cemetery.
