Obituary for Dr. Louis Ronald Urban

Louis R. Urban, O.D., “Ron”, 85, passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at Hospice of Dayton following complications of a stroke. Ron was born in Painesville, Ohio to Louis and Tuavi Urban. He was the eldest of five and grew up in Fairport Harbor, Ohio.

He attended Fairport Harding High School where he excelled in math and physics; graduating in 1950. Ron went on to serve four years in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict; receiving an honorable discharge in 1955. Following his military service, Ron discovered a passion for optometry. He attended and graduated from the Ohio State College of Optometry in 1963. While in school, he met fellow buckeye, Patricia Graham and the two were married in 1959. Ron practiced Optometry in Detroit, Michigan before moving to Middletown, Ohio to start his own practice in 1968. He practiced optometry for 50 years only stopping to retire in 2012 at the age of 80! During his tenure, he also served as a member of the medical staff at Middletown Regional Hospital. Dr. Urban will be remembered for his honesty, attention to detail, dedication to holistic patient care, dry wit, perseverance, and commitment to his family. Ron also found much joy spending time with his family especially his two granddaughters, playing tennis, perfecting his backstroke at the YMCA, listening to music, reading and attending continuing education classes.

Ron is survived by his wife of 58 years, Patricia Urban, his three daughters Jennifer Urban of Columbus, Joni Urban of Colorado, and Jill Stefanoni of Hudson, Ohio, his granddaughters, Olivia and Ava Stefanoni and his siblings, June Karako (Jack), Patricia Crosswhite (Bill), Joellen Fordham (Lynn) and Thomas Urban (Kathy) and many nieces and nephews.

A private service will be held for family in Fairport Harbor in November. In lieu of flowers, family requests contributions be made to Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave, Dayton, OH 45420 www.hospiceofdayton.org/donations/.
